Veterinary Assistant Job Summary
We are looking for a compassionate Veterinary Assistant to support our veterinarians and certified technicians! You will be responsible for keeping our facility safe and clean for all staff, clients and patients.
You may need to assist team members with patient care, giving extra TLC to patients, & performing administrative tasks.
Our ideal candidate should be responsible and take initiative on the job once skills are learned, going above and beyond.
You must have a passion for caring for animals and excellent customer service skills.
If you like animals but don't like people, this is not the job for you.
Pets don't come in on their own! Communication and teamwork is necessary with our hospital team and with the pet caregivers!
Veterinary Assistant Duties and Responsibilities
Clean and sterilize instruments, equipment, and tools.
Ensure supplies and exam rooms are regularly stocked and kept clean.
Laundry… a lot of laundry.
Some of which has blood, poop or urine on it.
Cleaning up patient poop, urine, vomit, blood, etc.
Maintain a clean & odorless hospital environment, regular mopping, sweeping and vacuuming throughout the day.
Keeping counters, cabinets and all surfaces/equipment sanitary.
Collecting garbage, sharps/needles and recycling daily.
Provide cheese, treats and yummy distractions to patients in need of extra TLC during their visits.
Care for animals by feeding, watering, and exercising as directed.
Assist in holding patients during exams and for collecting blood/urine samples.
Perform administrative duties such as updating files, answering calls and updating hospital documents.
More hands-on patient skills may be taught when extra assistance is needed.
Veterinary Assistant Requirements and Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree or course in veterinary technology or animal science program a plus.
1+ years of experience as a veterinary assistant is required.
Able to multitask, prioritize, and manage time independently & efficiently.
Basic understanding of animal behavior and health care.
Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google docs, +/- social media.
Attention to detail in order to maintain accurate patient records.
Physical ability to restrain larger pets when necessary and lift up to 50 pounds.
Able to work 1 Saturday per month, occasionally 2.
Rotate 7:30-6pm shifts on surgery days if needed.
